The Life You Can Save

From EA Wiki

The Life You Can Save is the name of both a book by Peter Singer and the accompanying website and organisation, which can be found at http://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/.

The book

The book The Life You Can Save was published in 2009. Singer presents his long-standing arguments that citizens of affluent nations are behaving immorally if they do not act to end the poverty they know to exist in developing nations. The book is focussed on giving to charity, and discusses philosophical considerations, describes practical and psychological obstacles to giving, and lists available resources for prospective donors (e.g. charity evaluators). Singer concludes the book by proposing a minimum ethical standard of giving, and pointing readers to a pledge to give at least 1% of their income (more for those with higher income) that they can take on the accompanying website.

The organisation

Peter Singer launched The Life You Can Save's website (with its giving pledge) when publishing the book, and some of his students worked with him to develop this. Charlie Bresler came on board in 2012, and the organisation began taking on paid employees in 2013 and became a registered US charity in December of that year[1]. Before this the organisation was briefly officially part of CEA.

The Life You Can Save publishes and promotes a list of highly cost-effective recommended charities, and encourages people to pledge a percentage of their income to these outstanding causes. It also raises awareness about extreme poverty, and how to combat its devastating effects, through live outreach events such as Giving Games, online, and via media appearances.[2]
